August updates!

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

Hi guys,

I can’t thank you all for the support. It’s been kind of quiet without the fans during training camp, but it’s always great to see you guys during the open practices.

Camp has gone well. I feel healthy and am ready for the season to begin. I personally can not wait to start hitting other people besides my teammates.

Thank you for all the concern during my collision with Eric Weddle. I am fine. It happens in football sometimes, but the good news – we’re both ok. Eric is a good friend of mine so there’s no hard feelings. He’s an intense player that plays 100% all the time. I like that in a teammate. So again, thank you for all the e-mails and concern.

My foundation started an auction for my 2008 Gene Upshaw jersey. The winning bidder gets my game used jersey, 2 tickets to the Monday Night Football game vs. the Denver Broncos, and after the game hang out in the family parking lot with my family and teammates. You’ll get the opportunity to meet the other players, ask for autographs, and get to know us with our helmets off. If you want to place a bid on the Ultimate Fan Experience, e-mail me at quentin@jammerfoundation.org

I wanted to welcome the kids of San Pasqual back to school! Good luck to the Dragons Football Team and I wish everyone at the school a prosperous 2009 academic year. We recently provided food for the kids welcoming them all back. I wanted to send special thanks to the people that made it happen. Debby Syverson from San Pasqual, Filippis Pizza Grotto, Sushi on a Roll (SOAR), and L&L’s Hawaiian BBQ.

My wife Alicia is participating in ‘Walk Like MADD 2009′ to raise funds for Mother’s Against Drunk Driving. Having 3 kids of our own, we find it worthwhile to support organizations like MADD. If you would like to participate and join Alicia during her walk, please click on the following link and look for ‘Jammer Family Foundation.’

http://support.madd.org/site/TR?fr_id=2560&pg=entry

Alicia has a  friendly competitive bet with Laura Cane of Star 94.1. The person that raises less money – will have to run Torrey Pines.

Before training camp, I had the opportunity to play some golf at Pechanga with the guys from ProLawn Care. That golf course is beautiful. I wish I had played better, but now that I have my Taylor Made R9’s, the score will definitely start improving, hopefully.  :-)

I also wanted to send a special thanks to Paul over at Carl Burger Dodge. Check out this new Dodge Charger that I’m driving around in. I will have more pictures later.  At the end of the season, Paul is going to raffle off this car to a lucky winner. I’ll get you guys more information how to sign-up. But man, I love the customized elements they put in it. This car is a beast! Thanks Dodge!

Other than that, we’re off to Arizona in a couple of days and getting ready for this season to begin!

Alicia and I were truly honored when we received this letter from Shawn and Jamie Aitken. We couldn’t wait for “Little Q’s’ arrival.

And here he is: Quentin Thompson Aitken 9 lbs. 1 oz   :-)

TAYLOR MADE ‘THE KINGDOM’ FITTING

I had an amazing opportunity to experience firsthand ‘The Kingdom’ at Taylor Made headquarters in Carlsbad. I’ve been wanting to switch from my R7’s to the new R9 Burners in hopes my scores improve! You see, I recently played in the San Diego Celebrity Classic and I came in dead last. If you haven’t attended the San Diego Celebrity Classic, I highly suggest you go next year, Cheryl and her group run a first class tournament. After much heckling and teasing from teammates and friends, I am hoping to improve my position next year. Hopefully with these new clubs, I’ll win the bet.

Alan and Lizzy of Taylor Made assisted me with the fitting. I also had the opportunity to go behind the scenes and see how the clubs are made. It’s true what they say that golf is a science. They had computers to view my swing, ball flight, speed of the club, etc… it was a tad bit overwhelming, but overall what an experience.

Thanks Alan and Lizzy for such an amazing time. Also, please extend our thanks to Mr. King…it was nice talking to him as well.

SURPRISE BIRTHDAY PARTY WITH LUDACRIS
No, I’m not old! I might be 30 but I feel 20! :-)

My beautiful wife Alicia threw a surprise birthday party for me on Friday at the Red Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. I had no idea what was going on as I was blindfolded when I arrived for dinner.  After dinner, we went to the Cherry Night Club where my teammates, friends, and family all surprised me with their attendance. I normally don’t like being the center of attention, but it was such an amazing scene! Good family, good friends, and good people….

That’s not all, Alicia had another surprise up her sleeve…the music in the club suddenly stopped, and to my amazement, Ludacris, yes, Luda the rapper gets on the mic and starts performing for us. I love Ludacris, I can’t believe he performed a 2-hour set!

I feel blessed and thank each and everyone that attended my birthday party. There are no words to express how much I appreciate each and everyone of you. I’ll try and get some more pictures from the event and will post….

SAN PASQUAL ACADEMY SENIOR DINNER
On Monday, June 15th we had an amazing dinner with the 2009 graduating class of San Pasqual Academy. With the generosity of Mission Valley Benihana’s, we were able to treat all the kids to a steak, shrimp, or chicken dinner. The chefs were amazing as usual – they had the kids laughing and enjoying every minute while preparing their meal. We can’t thank the entire Mission Valley crew enough. Tim, Debbie, Francis you guys rock!

But before dinner, the kids travelled in style by the generous support of Epic Limo in providing a limo bus! Ryan from Epic Limo provided a full sized limo bus that had the kids traveling in style. There was music, dancing, and absolute class. We highly recommend using Epic Limo for any of your events. These guys know what they’re doing. www.epiclimo.com

Darren Sproles and Antoine Cason also made a surprise appearance for the kids and joined us for dinner. The kids had an opportunity to take photos, get autographs, and most important – just spend time with them and chat.

Now I’m getting hungry just thinking about the food…..

SAN PASQUAL GRADUATION
Alicia and I have always made it a priority to attend San Pasqual’s graduation. This year, just like the previous years was very emotional.  You ever go to a graduation ceremony and listen to speech after speech and barely make it through without dozing off?  At San Pasqual Academy it’s different. The speeches, stories, and motivational messages are so powerful that I often find myself emotional over the adversities these kids have gone through. These kids are truly inspirational and we are so proud of them for their achievements.

When I wake up in the morning, or when I prepare for a game – my adversities are making sure my 3 sons don’t beat each other up and or worry about the receiver line up in front of me on Sunday. These kids have faced so much more, they’ve faced real life adversities… I truly commend each and everyone of them for making it.

Although they’ve graduated, Alicia and I have promised to stay in touch with them and will continue to track them in college! I love receiving e-mails and text messages from these kids before a game….they are heroes in my book.

It’s a boy! Meet Kasen Orin Jammer!

Season is right around the corner!

Tuesday, April 7th, 2009

Hi guys,

It’s been a very busy off-season for me but I am now logged in and writing in my journal. Thank you so much for the e-mails and letters regarding my hamstring. I am glad to report the hamstring I pulled during the Pittsburgh game is now 100%. I started to rehab immediately after the season and can’t even feel any repercussions from the pull.

I haven’t really had an opportunity to get away because Alicia and I are expecting our 3rd son in a couple of days. We did visit Napa Valley for a couple of days but have primarily been staying close to home. We also celebrated Kaden and Kaleb’s 1st and 2nd birthday this past March. Here are some photos from the celebration. They both love Mickey Mouse.

Besides rehab, birthdays, family trips, and a new baby on the way, we also moved to a new house to accommodate our growing family. Luckily, we didn’t move too far from our first house – just a couple of blocks away. Here are some photos of our new house. If you guys ever need artificial lawn installed in your yard, I highly recommend ProLawn Turf. These guys were amazing, professional, and got the job done right the first time. Go with these guys – they know what they’re doing!

I can not wait for this season to begin! Last season, we had so many lingering questions with injuries even before the first snap. Luckily, we are healthy going into camp this year. We have started to lift and currently in off-season sessions. This team is focused, so many players have reported and putting in extra time before mini-camp begins.

Ok, I have to log-off for now. Alicia and I are expecting this baby anyday now. I’ll get you pictures of the new baby as soon as possible.

Thanks for your support.
Quentin

jammerfamily

My family and I want to personally thank each and everyone of you for your support. Your e-mails, kind words, and encouragement goes such a long way! I really enjoy reading your questions. As a matter of fact, I look forward to seeing them every week. Please continue to send me questions during the off-season, I will continue to update my site throughout the summer. If you also have an ideas that you would find interesting to add on my site, please let me know.

My wife and I are getting ready to have another child (boy) on April 7th. We normally take a vacation after the season, but with baby #3 on his way, our plans have been minimal. We are however taking a couple of trips here and there, but nothing too big or far – we’ll be in San Diego hanging around.

Some people are wondering how I got involved with San Pasqual Academy. Personally, my family and I have a special place in our heart for kids. I’ve been working with children’s group ever since I came into the league. Two years ago I felt that I needed to build a relationship  with a set group of kids. We found the San Pasqual Academy and I was quickly impressed with how strong and enthusiastic they all were despite their hardships. I know it might sound cliche’, but I strongly believe that our country’s future lies in the hands of our youth. By being a role model and reaching out to them, I just might inspire the next president, Martin Luther King, Oprah, etc…

Although we came up short against Pittsburgh, I am proud of the way our team played and fought back when all the naysayers said we were out of it. At 4-8, we could have easily folded our tents and mailed it in. But with the characters and leaders on this team, we fought hard all the way to Pittsburgh. It was unfortunate I got injured in the 3rd quarter of the game. I suffered a slight hamstring tear which will not require surgery, it will heal on it’s own. I am however in the training room as much as I can rehabbing. The way I look at it, might as well get it ready and healed now rather than wait.

Once again thank you for all your support! Here are my answers to your questions!

With thanks,
Quentin

—————————————————————————–

Question from Darcy:
As Sunday proved, if you’re not on the field, this secondary collapses. I think you are the toughest player on the team, no doubt. What do you think this team needs to focus on next year?

Quentin: I think the team needs to focus on ourselves.  I think we got caught up in the talk about us being in the Super Bowl.  We just need to get back to our foundation which is hard nose defense, great special teams play, and big play offense.

—————————————————————————–

Question from EinsteinMc2Bolts:
What’s your opinion on this whole LT vs. AJ battle happening in the media?

Quentin: I love Philip Rivers and he is becoming the face of this football team, but you can’t speak of the San Diego Chargers without thinking of LT.  LT is a great asset to this football team and community.

—————————————————————————–

Question from GlorifyPastForum:
Quentin there has been a lot of talk about AJ having an ego and is not liked by the players. What is your pesonal opinon of AJ Smith?

Quentin: The NFL is a hard nose business and he approaches his job as you should approach any high pressure job such as his.  It’s not easy making the decisions he has to make. I know I wouldn’t want to be in his shoes, it’s too much pressure.

—————————————————————————–

Question from Kyle McDaniel:
I want to buy your jersey, where do you recommend I go get me some?

Quentin: As for jerseys, let me do some research and I will post my findings.

—————————————————————————–

Question from wmzpower:
Quentin, your game has continually evolved year after year. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned the past couple of years in being a top cornerback in the league.

Quentin: Athletic ability isn’t the most important asset as much as film study and how you approach the game.

—————————————————————————–

Question from DialtaCholo:
I am entering my senior year in high school and wanted to know what you would recommend for me to do to increase my speed.

Quentin:  Strengthen your core, abs and lower back. Plyometrics and Olympic lifts. When I wanted to increase my speed I started working out with the track coach at  UT, so speak with your track coach and ask him to help you out with these exercises.

—————————————————————————–

Question from Carlos Mendoza:
I wanted to commend you for an outstanding year. Do you think AJ will finally pull the trigger and give you some help in the backfield. Clinton Hart is terrible and I can’t count how many times he is so out of place. How about someone like Brian Dawkins? I probably remember at least 4 times the opposing team gained valuable yards because Clinton was out of place. Do you think he’ll be back? I hope not.

Quention: Clinton will be okay.

—————————————————————————–

Question from TI-FAN92123
What do you think are the positions that need to be upgraded?

Quentin:This is why I’m glad that I am not in AJ’s shoes.  He has by far the toughest job at Charger Park and one of the toughest in the NFL.

—————————————————————————–

Question from FightOnTrojan:
What do you think of Ray Maluluga from USC? Do you think the Chargers should try and get him in the draft? Same question, if you were AJ Smith, who in the draft would you select?

Quentin: Ray M. is an awesome player. I think he will be drafted higher than our pick at 16.

On to Pittsburgh!

bolts_colts

First and foremost – a sincere thanks to all the fans that attended the game on Saturday against the Colts! You played an integral part in distracting the Colts offense. In addition, I can’t begin to tell you how important your cheers are when we’re on defense. We as a defense feed off of your energy and we feel it when we line up. The sight and literally feeling the entire stadium shake under our cleats gets us all pumped up!  Gives me the chills just thinking about it!

The victory on Sunday is the perfect example of a TEAM VICTORY.

We knew what we had to do to try and contain Manning. As great a player Manning is, you can never stop him – just hope that you can contain him. With the exception of Manning’s quick snap and touchdown to Reggie Wayne, Coach Rivera installed a great game plan that we played to near perfection. I think everyone on this team is finally starting to play what they’re capable of playing.

I’ve received a lot of e-mails from fans concerned about our intensity and focus diminishing. I can assure you that will NOT happen.  This team has one goal and we will do whatever it is we need to do to reach that goal. There will be no emotional let down, this team has a chip on it’s shoulder and will play hard during each snap.

So it’s back to Pittsburgh.  The Steelers are a very talented team with a lot of great players! In addition, they have a wonderful fan base that can get just as loud as Qualcomm. However, we are prepared and ready to  go toe-to-toe on Sunday. This will be an exciting game and the winner gets to advance to the AFC Championship game!

I have to get back into the video room and dissect more film from our first game against the Steelers. I thank you for taking the time to read my journal and as always, please continue to send your questions and comments.

Wish us luck on Sunday! Go Bolts

- Quentin

Question from  NoHoHomer:

Thank you for being a loyal Charger. We’re proud to have you man. Would you like to see Rivers try one of those quick snaps before the defense is set like Manning did on Cromartie and our D for the touchdown?

Do you ever out a bug in Rivera’s ear about doing a corner blitz?

Quentin: Philip could have quick  snapped the Colts defense when they were running the Colts defense off the field but we didn’t.  That’s just one of those things that Peyton saw and felt he needed to take advantage of because our defense was playing tough.  Very smart and veteran move on Manning’s part.

Yes NoHoHomer, I am always putting a bug in Coach Rivera’s ear about sending me on a corner blitz. We just haven’t used it but we do have something.

========================

Question from Wonderslug:
Why didn’t anyone on the defense call timeout when Peyton tried to quick snap and catch you offguard?

Giving up a T.O. rather than an easy TD is always a good idea.

Quentin: It’s really hard to anticipate something like that, we had no clue he was going to quick snap us. It was smart of Manning to catch us off guard. Big lesson learned…always be prepared for anything.

=====================

Question from Still_here:
Does coming in 8-8, instead of 14-2, effect you outlook for the playoffs? Do you feel less pressure?

Who has been the hardest receiver to cover so far?

Quentin: I think being 8-8 makes us have to work that much harder because we came from 4-8 to get here. A lot of people counted us out, but we fought and stayed focus!   The way this team is playing right now, it’s just starting to peak.

The hardest wide receiver I have covered so far would be: Randy Moss, but I think the best receiver in the league is Andre Johnson and Steve Smith.

====================

Question from Pennsylvania Charger:

Will this team continue to stay focus on the ultimate goal and how hard is it to go on the road in the playoffs and to keep the same efficiency they had last against the Colts?

Quentin: We are going to continue to stay focused and hungry to chase the ultimate goal! It’s always hard to win on the road because the players feed off of the fans energy. In addition, the weather can sometimes play a huge factor.

====================

Question from Binary Bolt Fan:

Have you ever seen a more fired up crowd at the Q and did you think Manning got rattled by the noise?

Quentin: It’s been a while since I have seen Qualcomm so excited and loud! The fans definitely played a huge part in that win! As I’ve mentioned before, football is a game of energy and San Diego was awesome that night!

Manning is one of the best quarterbacks to ever play this game. He is a crafty veteran, but yes, I believe he got rattled a couple of times during the game. For example the Tim Dobbins sack on 3rd and 2, the entire stadium was literally shaking and moving from all the noise!

====================

Question from Waterston Fan:

Why doesn’t Norv do many trick plays?

Quentin: Trick plays are great when they work, but when they don’t, it normally spells disaster for the offense. In addition, the players and coaches rarely get fooled. At this level, I can almost guarantee that majority of the players have seen all of the trick plays.

====================

Question from ASUPickle

Hi Quentin. Congratulations. I have one questions. What makes Norv a good playoff coach and why did Marty struggle so much? What is your opinion on that?

Quentin: I don’t think that one coach is better than the other as far as playoff wins go. I’ve been saying it all year long that we have got to win our individual battles on the field, and when we started doing that – we started winning. I also think each individual player took a look at themselves and made a decision that we are going to win playoff games.

====================

Question from Jujubees Bubbles
Are you superstitious?

Quentin: I’m not really superstitious but I do have a routine that I stick to  before the game:

- Steak and pasta the night before the game.

- Read the Game Day Magazine at the stadium in the locker room.

- Speak to my wife and kids before the game starts.

- Listen to the same group of songs when I’m on my way to the game and once again when I’m headed      home.

- After a win, I always use the same route home that I took to get to the game.

- After the game, I let my son (Kaden) sign autographs, he loves signing them.

It’s Playoff Time!

Saturday, January 3rd, 2009

Charger fans,

I can’t thank each and everyone of you enough for all the support you’ve given not only for myself, but my entire family. We are truly blessed to have such wonderful fans in San Diego and around the country. For those of you that will be at the game tomorrow, we hope you are even louder than our game  last week against Denver!

We had a solid week of practice focusing on all the little details that we need to be prepared for when we play the Colts.  We will continue to play with the passion that you expect from us. We want to give everyone in San Diego another game to watch next week!

I just put my kids to bed and it’s now time for me to rest as well. We have very big day ahead of us.

Keep the questions coming and we’ll talk after the game. Please let us know what else you would like to see on my site.

I truly enjoy interacting with everyone.

Thank you,
Q

Happy Holidays! Here come the Colts….

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Charger Fans!

From my family to yours, we hope you had a wonderful Christmas! I want to send a special thanks to our friends at Peohe’s Restaurant and my teammate Shaun Phillips for participating in my annual Christmas dinner benefiting the students of San Pasqual Academy. With their support, we were able to provide laptops, iPods, books, clothing, sports equipment, DVD’s, and Xbox’s. I have some pictures in my photo gallery.

It has been an exciting ride the past couple of weeks! I am extremely proud of our team and the way we held it together. We never lost confidence and we wanted to finish the season strong. There was a lot of pride -  and – no way was this team going to lay down and give up on the season. As I had mentioned before, it was up to us to win our one-on-one battles and for everyone to play what their capable of.

A lot of people wrote us off but we believed in each other. It will be exciting when the Colts come into town this Saturday. It will be a tough battle, but we are ready. There will be no let down because right now we are playing with a chip on our shoulders.  Manning is one of the best quarterbacks to ever play this game, we have to put some pressure and harass him as much as we possibly can.

We made it into the playoffs as an 8-8 team. However, as of now, everyone is 0-0. We are determined, fired-up, and willing to do anything to win this Saturday. We will come out strong.

Lastly, I want to thank everyone that attended the game yesterday, that was probably the loudest I’ve heard Qualcomm in a very long time. We hope you shout and cheer for us even louder next Saturday.

Thanks for all your support,

Quentin

Q&A with Quentin

From: John Gutierez
Question:
Hi Quentin i have a question about Philip Rivers do the team like him or does some of you get mad at all his antics? Some people say he is just really competivtive, but does that get annoying to you and the defense?

Quentin: I’m going to give you a straight answer: We love Philips antics. We love the fact that he is out there talking and backing it up. We love to have fun and it is a competitive sport and we rally behind our quarterback!

From: Paul Marx
Question:
When does your contract expire and how many more years do you think you have playing? Will the Chargers re-sign you?

Quentin: Contract expires in 2012

From: Crackerstick
Question:
In regards to the play in which he made the nose crushing hit on Garcia, as the play is approaching him does he consciously tell himself to lead with the shoulder, or is it just habit from repitition? And secondly, after the play is over or even after the game, did he feel any pain from such an impact?

Quentin: I lead with my shoulders to hit because that’s the way I was taught – and – no I don’t feel any pain from those hits.
